What Are Dermal Fillers?

dermal fillers

If you are looking for a wrinkle reduction treatment that does not involve surgery, you should consider dermal fillers. These injectable products contain substances that foster greater facial volume and fill in lines and wrinkles that can leave you looking older than your actual age.

Aging and Your Skin

The development of lines and wrinkles is inevitable, but we can also delay their appearance or reduce them if they have already formed. One of the chief causes of aging skin is the loss of hyaluronic acid. You may be familiar with this substance as a popular ingredient in many skin care products. It also works very well as a filler when injected directly into the skin.

When you are young, your body produces ample hyaluronic acid, leading to skin that is more moist and full. Hyaluronic acid has the unique ability to attract moisture and hold it inside your skin tissue. Skin deficient in hyaluronic acid will become gradually thin and more vulnerable to the formation of wrinkles.

Restylane®

Restylane® is one of the dermal fillers that contains a hyaluronic acid mixture within a flowing gel. Once we inject Restylane® into your face, it goes to work immediately to draw moisture into your skin for a fuller look and a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles.

Juvederm®

In some ways, Juvederm® is a similar product to Restylane®. Both dermal fillers contain hyaluronic acid to increase skin moisture and volume. Similar to Restylane®, Juvederm® also contains another ingredient: lidocaine. Lidocaine is mixed into the injectable gel to make sure you are comfortable during your treatment.

Radiesse®

Radiesse® works differently than Restylane® and Juvederm® and contains a different active ingredient: calcium hydroxylapatite. This material is also found in your bones and teeth. It is mixed within a gel in the form of microspheres to enhance the effectiveness of the treatment. Once present under your skin, Radiesse® will encourage the formation of new collagen fibers and promote enhanced skin thickness and a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles.

Dermal Fillers Results

Patients are usually gratified by their results because they are immediate. You should notice an immediate improvement in the thickness of your skin and a reduction in wrinkles that will continue to build over the following days and weeks. It is important to realize, however, that your body will continue to age normally after your treatment. The injected ingredients will be eventually metabolized fully by your body, and you will need follow-up injections at that time. How long your results will last depends on the product used.
