Otoplasty, or ear surgery, is performed to improve the appearance of the ears when they stick out from the side of the hear or are overly prominent. Children with overly large or prominent ears are, unfortunately, often the target of mean teasing by their peers which can damage their self-confidence well into adulthood. Otoplasty is often recommended to be performed as soon as possible both because the cartilage of the ear is more malleable in children and to avoid unnecessary years of teasing. Children age five and up are typically eligible for this procedure, though teens and adults can benefit from the procedure as well.
