The History of The Crystal Charity Ball
In 1951, after attending a ball in the Rainbow Room of the Waldorf-Astoria benefiting children’s charities, Dallasite Nancy Ann Smith came home inspired and gathered 18 like-minded women who became the founders of the Crystal Charity Ball.
The first year, The Crystal Charity Ball raised funds for the Dallas Polio Chapter later to become the March of Dimes. After their immediate success, The Crystal Charity Ball benefited two organizations the following year, the National Association for Mental Health and the Children’s Development Center. Within a short period of time, the Ball became a much-loved tradition and celebration for philanthropic individuals and companies to end the year on a festive and meaningful note.
In 2002, The Crystal Charity Ball celebrated its 50th anniversary, commemorating this milestone with the selection of The 50th Anniversary Project. Three million dollars was raised over a multi-year period for this project to create the Children’s Learning Center of The Museum of Dallas History at Old Red Courthouse. Over 1850 guests will join Ball Chairman, Chris “Connie” O’Neill who helms this years festivities along with Honorary Chairman, Annette Simmons.
